Well it’s time once again for me to recommend a movie that 97% of you probably haven’t even ever heard of (ala the Infernal Affairs trilogy, which i hear is going to be remade by Martin Scorsese, possibly starring Brad Pitt and Leo ‘King Of The World’ DiCaprio. w00t!).
ANYWAY, to the 3% of you who’ve seen The Eye, whether it was during its super ultra limited US release last year or on bootleg VCD/DVD if you live in Asia (because seriously, nobody in Asia actually goes to the movies when they can just get all the latest releases on VCD/DVD like a day after [or sometimes even a fucking week before] its official theatrical release date), you might remember The Eye to be one of the better Hong Kong produced horror movies of the year. I definitely thought so. And for once, it was nice to actually watch a horror movie that actually had genuine scares in it. I can tell you that there’s at least one BIG scare in the movie and it wasn’t even a cheap BOO scare. I guarantee that it’ll make your girlfriend jump if you watch it with her.
A coupla years ago, i saw Ringu (aka The Ring) and contrary to what my roommate told me at the time, i didn’t find it in the least bit frightening. Then i saw the American remake last year and while i do admit that it’s scarier than the original, it still didn’t do anything for me (although i’ve heard that it scared the bejeezus out of most American viewers, mostly those who were unaccustomed to Asian style horror [you know… creepy girls with long hair covering their face kind of ‘horror’… which is so typical in Asia that it doesn’t really scare ‘us’ anymore… us being us azns of course… unless you’re Stacy and you get pretty much find everything scary, even silly Aliens and Predators like in that Batman: Dead End short. Yeah, she actually thought it was scary]). But anyhow, i think it’s safe to say that if the American remake of The Ring scared you, then The Eye will probably scare you shitless. And that’s saying a lot since, remember it isn’t a remake (although i think they probably ARE going to remake it and Americanize it at some point in the future.. the rights have already been bought by New Line) but yet it’s just as slick and as stylish as an American remake (Ringu = blah. not scary. The Ring = slick. scary. The Eye = very slick (for a Hong Kong movie). and twice as scary). But of course, with me telling you that it’s supposed to be scary, if you ever do decide to watch this movie someday, you’re probably gonna be bracing yourself for all the scares and thus, diluting the overall experience. Which is why it’s always good to go in as ‘fresh’ as possible (i.e not watching trailers and reading reviews prior to watching said horror movie so as to not know what to expect and subsequently be pleasantly scared shitless when you’re supposed to be).
ANYWAY, for those of you who missed out on The Eye, here’s the trailer for the first movie. Which is presumably the most you’ll ever see of it seeing that it’s a foreign movie with *gasp* subtitles and we all know how everybody HATES subtitles in these here parts.
And now for those of us who’ve actually seen the movie, treat yourselves to the teaser trailer for the SECOND movie, cleverly titled, The Eye 2, of course.
Note: FOR MAXIMUM EFFECT. TURN UP THE VOLUME. TURN OFF THE LIGHTS. AND WATCH IT ALONE.
It’s not much but FUCK. Lemme know how it went for all you Eye veterans.
SHIT. SCARY.
I haven’t read it but I felt like posting.

I saw the Ringu movie, you were right Justin it wasn’t that scary. Hell the freaky ghost girl took her sweet ass time coming out of the tv. But the good thing about the movie was the female lead. Damn she so fucken hot. She was in the GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) series.

i watched The Eye b4, it is among the more scarier asian movies. the lead actress is a malaysian chinese singer. the sequal has shu qi as lead actress, e former soft porn queen of taiwan! the ring sux! ju-on is a much better jap ghost movie now. i think they released in america with e title ju-on:the grudge, e ju-on 2 FINAL was just released. here r some links:

phone can eat my ass! i bought that on dvd last year and it bored me to tears. i had no idea what the hell was going on due to poorly translated subs (i got a really lousy ‘fake’ bootleg dvd copy with subtitles that seemed like they were pulled out of someones ass) and i didnt even finish watching it. i turned it off about halfway through. maybe someday i will get the official release dvd (with proper subs) and rewatch it. but the half that i watched didnt really impress me though. nothing scary. except for the little girl. one moment she’s all little girly and smiling and then the next moment she’s the devil. little asian girls are creepy!
juon the grudge can eat my ass too. totally unscary. to me at least. a chick friend of my told me it was the scariest thing ever. scared the hell out of her bla bla blah. but the whole time i was watching it i just couldnt help but notice how bad the makeup job on that little kid was. plus the subs were horrible (again, i bought the unofficial bootleg dvd release.. with made up subtitles. lousy lousy translation). anyhow, they’re remaking juon with sarah michelle gellar right now as we speak. i think i’ll give the remake a chance seeing as how it’s actually being directed by the guy who directed the japanese original, even though it’s the american remake (plus sam raimi is lending a helping hand by producing it!! woo!)
a tale of two sisters. havent seen it yet. i wish i had the chance to pick it up before i left for the states =( apparently it’s like really good (and the dvd was a official bootleg release too. so the subs wouldnt have been a problem like with juon and phone). never heard of wishing stairs.
oh yeah, angelica lee is pretty cute.
i’d give my right eye to be able to have teh sex with her (ha!! my right eye! get it?? ahahaha. hahaha. haha. ha…)
#20 | Comment by Justin — March 14, 2004 @ 6:25 am
yeah, i think u should get a good sub 2 enjoy a movie, tis includes ghost movies. e ghost in the phone did appear most of e ‘2nd half’ of e movie, so u can enjoy it. i also agree ju-on the grudge is not scary becoz e ghost did not actually make more than 1% appearance of the total film, but people told me dat the final(sequal) was scary becoz the dude came out for more than 80% of the movie. so give it a try.
i guess horror movies are pretty subjective. movies u think is scary is not for others and so on. wat i offered is like among the few famous ones released in asia. so it depends on people 2 b scared or not.
heck, i enjoyed playing fatal frame n fatal frame 2 on e PS2. i think it is much better than silent hill series. silent hill is not scary 4 me. fatal frame can make me jump sometimes with those shockers!
#21 | Comment by DieHardX — March 14, 2004 @ 7:41 am
oh yeah, another important thing 2 note, e mood n setting is veli important when u watch a horror film. probably dat’s the reason why i think the phone is good. i went myself 4 a midnite show with frens but drive alone. park my car in some dark alleys. after watching the movie, on ur way home driving, u will alwiz look at the mirror 2 check ur back seats wondering if something is sitting there, haha!
the point is watching a movie with companions n in broad daylight will make it different. being alone, dark, with big screens and loud speakers will make a totally different experience. of coz the movie has to be good to make u thrill.

hell no, ringu is alot scarier than the ring, the ring is fucking full of CG, and it werent that good neither. unless it’s a scifi film, hollywood shouldnt use CG, because we can tell it’s a fucking CG. atleast ringu is pretty original and has a plot.
As for infernal affairs, it should star brad pitt, tom cruise, robert de niro and al pacino as the leading four roles, now that’s a dream cast. ( i really hate that leo kid.)

#31 | Comment by xxxzl — March 14, 2004 @ 3:17 pm
Seen my share of Hong Kong flicks, although clearly not as many as some of you. Mostly crap, with a few great scenes or plot twists in them that Hollywood’s cliche-machine couldn’t produce if you put a gun to their collective heads. While that is commendable, and worthy to note, it doesn’t make for a good movie.
I can’t help thinking people that discuss obscure Hong Kong flicks are the same douche bags discussing obscure bands, because anything that’s even remotely commercial just couldn’t be any good. If more than 2 people like it, it just has to be crap.
I got news for you. Listening/watching obscure shit, doesn’t make you "interesting". Doesn’t make you "intellectual" either. It just makes you a pretentious bag of shit.
So next time you want to chime into a conversation heralding the local garage band as the greatest band to ever grace the face of the earth, and incidentally all of humanity is too stupid to realize their genius, EXCEPT for YOU. You fucking rebel, you. Keep your unoriginal fucking trap shut.
Same goes for movies.
This isn’t actually even directed at Justin — but I’m sure some of you douche bags will recognize yourselves in my little "description".

the eye looks kinda dumb. i though the ring (american version) was dumb also, but naomi watts was hot. i also saw ringu, which was dumb, but also is one of the funniest movies i have ever seen. I couldn’t stop laughing the whole time i was watching it. Maybe thats cause i was high at the time, but i think it was because i am i just a jackass. I laughed in Titanic as well, when everyone was plummeting to their deaths as it sank, so i have a precident of laughing at "sad" or "scarey" things.

all these asian movie remakes into american movies with american actors suck balls. they should just leave them alone. fucking american versions suck balls. fucking sarah michelle gellar in that movie remake. leonardo di-crapio in an infernal movie remake. what the fuck. who the hell is making this awful damned casts anyways. argh. and yes, Ringu is better than the Ring because it was seemingly more believable to see a real person portray a ghost instead of a fucking CG ghost. that’s what kills a lot of supposed horror movies — too much CG and special effects. and now these american companies are ripping off asian ones because they can’t make their own new ones. fuck fuck fuck.
#52 | Comment by anti-wubya — March 15, 2004 @ 12:28 pm
Asian remakes? You know that if it is somehow innovative, creative, plus a different angle..
Immsomnia—— Same Name
The Vanishing—Same Name
La Jetée— 12 Monkeys
Diabolique– Same Name
Abre los Ojos–Vanilla Sky
La Cage aux Folles–The Birdcage
La Femme Nikita–Point Of No Return
Trois Hommes et un Couffin–Three Men and a Baby
Seven Samurai–The Magnificent seven
Purple Noon–The talented Mr. Ripley
And so on and so forth… recycling in order to make a quick buck.
I am waiting for the US to make a remake of "Ripley’s Game" and have John Malkovich reprise his original role, but turn in a crappy performance.
But wait it works both ways, enjoy. I know I am a tool, that takes his foreign films a bit too seriously. I forgot to mention Swept away, a madonna gem.. geez… I’m leaving.

#54 | Comment by ripcord — March 15, 2004 @ 12:56 pm
I agree that besides the caligraphy part of the movie it really wasnt that scary, and that the ring(and ringu) were much scarier. The eye had much better cinematography. As to international movies, City of God is one of the best movies of the year, and in terms of more obscure ones, The Barbarian Invasions, a french flick, is awesome.
