Kill Bill bootleg DVD pictures two posts down. And if you look closely, you’ll see Versus right next to it. But more on that movie later.
So i finally saw Kill Bill. And to be honest, it wasn’t as great as i expected it to be. I dunno. Maybe it was just that. My expectations. Not to say that i really had any but at the very least i was expecting Kill Bill to be like, really good, you know? At best, i can only say that it was ‘good’. Not great, but just good. For what it is. Half a movie.
Then again i’ve only seen it once (unlike a certain Tarantino fanboy who’s seen it 5 times since it came out) so maybe the more i watch it, the more it’ll grow on me. Or something.
Things i liked about Kill Bill:
Go-Go Yubari. The little nods to Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs it had in there. And to a certain extent, Jackie Brown. Lucy Liu was pretty good too. And her little anime backstory thing was very nicely done. I actually thought that it was a lot more violent than what any of the live action stuff towards the end had to offer. Definitely a lot more cringe worthy. I hated the fact they had to go black and white during the massacre at the house of blue leaves scene though. Hopefully they’ll show the whole thing in full color on the special edition DVD (which will be released AFTER the initial barebones-y Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 DVD’s of course. Yeah Miramax, split the movie in two and then make people buy the DVD 3 times why don’t you). The silhouette fight was cool though. Oh and the movie had GREAT music.
Things i didn’t like? Go-Go Yubari’s big nose. The black and white stuff. And the fact that Miramax split the movie in half.
Plus, for a ‘homage’ movie, there sure wasn’t that many homages to be seen. Well. Nothing really recognizable anyway. Then again i don’t really have an extensive enough knowlegde of 70’s cult Hong Kong cinema to be able to recognize whatever subtle homages Tarantino might’ve snuck into the movie.
But at least they ended it with a hell of a cliffhanger. A much better one than what The Matrix Reloaded had to offer.
If splitting movies into two becomes a trend, i will be pissed. I blame LOTR and Reloaded (although those movies were justifiably split. they were planned to be that way. Kill Bill is supposed to be ONE movie. not two. maybe i should blame the Weinsteins).
After watching Kill Bill and Versus back to back, i decided that i liked Versus a bit more than i did Kill Bill. Not to say that i didn’t like Kill Bill. But i just thought Versus was a bit better.
They’re both kinda similar movies in some ways. They’re both homage flicks. Kill Bill a homage to old chop socky Hong Kong/Japanese revenge flicks. And Versus a Japanesehomage to… pretty much every good action and zombie horror movies from the past couple of decades (like The Evil Dead, Dead Alive, Terminator 2, The Matrix, Highlander, Mission Impossible 2, Robocop, Predator and a lot more). If Akira Kurosawa, Takeshi Miike, John Woo, George Romero, Peter Jackson and Sam Raimi got together to make a movie, this is probably what it would turn out like. The best Samurai/Gangster/Zombie Action Horror Comedy ever.
Here’s a little checklist of things you’ll find in this movie. (taken from here)

—————
Plotwise, the movie is pretty bare (just like Kill Bill) and it’s heavily reliant on style over substance (just like Kill Bill… Vol. 1 at least… Vol. 2 promises to be more plotty) but i’ll be damned if this isn’t the coolest looking movie ever. It’s up there with Kill Bill in terms of coolness at the very least. Maybe even cooler.
And definitely just as violent if not more violent.
Kill Bill and Versus. Two very good movies. I just happen to like Versus better.
By the way:
Go-Go Yubari. I’d like to penetrate her. Big nose and all.
I was wondering what your take on Go-Go would be. I find her to be so very humpable.
You ever catch ‘Lost in Translation’?

I thought Go-Go was a bit disturbing, she reminded me of Sadako from Ringu 😮

kill bill beats versus by lots…

First, Kill Bill only had the black and white shots included in the film so that it wouldn’t warrant an NC-17 rating. By putting some of the fight scenes in black and white, there was technically "less blood". Secondly, "Lost in Translation was a wonderful film and i would reccomed it to everyone.

i know. like i said, they better have the unrated color version of the scene on the special edition dvd or something otherwise i’ll be really disappointed. even charlies angels: full throttle is unrated on dvd with more gore. if tarantino doesn’t give me the color cut, then i want my money back!

God dammit. I didn’t really notice the Chiaki’s big nose until you pointed it out. The fantasy is ruined. 🙁

Justin, "Yeah Miramax, split the movie in two and then make people buy the DVD 3 times why don’t you). The silhouette fight was cool though. Oh and the movie had GREAT music. "
Uh… since you’re buying bootlegs, I doubt MIRAMAX will give a crap about your opinion…

i’m talking about the legit dvds fool. see, by the time the OFFICIAL dvds come out, i will be in michigan again where you can’t buy bootlegs as easily. plus i’d rather get originals when it comes to certain movies. like how i bought a non bootleg copy of TTT. and besides, for splitting the movie in half, they don’t deserve my money for the theatrical release anyway! nyaha! i still win.
and for the record, i only spent something like US$1.70 for the bootleg that i bought.

oh and zant –
yeah, the big nose kinda killed it for me too. but at least she still looks good when you don’t see her from the side.
big nose and all, i’d still penetrate her. if she doesn’t penetrate me first. HARRR.

I saw Intolerable Cruelty last weekend and then i snuck into Kill Bill for free afterwards. MiramAXE isn’t getting my money for chopping the movie in two either. I win too!

Wraith you realize for the $100+ you are spending on kill bill could be money spent on beer or hookers.
#16 | Comment by bligityblah — October 21, 2003 @ 12:55 pm
Two things –
Wraith, paragraphs and periods are good things. Capitalization helps, too.
Regarding Battle Royale – It’s funny, I downloaded that because of Chiaki, but she’s not in it much. She goes crazy in it.. let’s just say her scene, in Kill Bill, in the bar with the guy talking about Ferraris (sorry, terrible sentence) was a homage to Battle Royale. Namely, the stab location.
However, there’s plenty of other of the hot Asian schoolgirl types if that’s a big draw point as far as Chiaki goes. Kou Shibasaki is one.. she’s got one of the bigger parts in the movie. I had her mixed up with Chiaki for a bit. So she’s pretty hot, too.
And the movie is just twisted and fairly well-done enough to be enjoyable.

Just found this. Review/synopsis about Battle Royale. You might want to not read it.. but do whatever. I’m linking it because it’s the only site with decent screencaps of the movie I’ve seen.
http://www.horrordvdtalk.com/reviews/BattleRoyale/BattleRoyale.htm
Kou is the girl in the 8th pic with the gun being pointed at her.
Chiaki is the girl in the 9th pic in the yellow jogging suit.
And they made a point to take pictures only of the particularly gorey scenes..

Eh?
If you invoked the magic power of coherent sentences we might listen.
Otherwise; Sierra tango foxtrot uniform!

are you a tool? check
#22 | Comment by Phil — October 24, 2003 @ 3:05 am
Poor grammar is an indication of low intelligence. I mean, there’s typos, there’s writing sentences that break structural rules, and there’s just making yourself look stupid. I’m not a grammar whore, but good God, dude, they have English classes for reasons other than teaching you how to write papers in school.
#23 | Comment by zant — October 24, 2003 @ 12:16 pm
Battle Royale is much more gross than Kill Bill although Bill has much more bloods…

i stumbled across this page by accident. but if you love gorgeous gore, go see takashi miike’s ‘Ichi the Killer’ and look for karen.
it’s so graphic / violent / perverse that i was illegal in the us upon its release.
#27 | Comment by scardarling — January 8, 2004 @ 9:03 am
THE BLACK AND WHITE in kill bill was because tarantino used old japanese samurai movies (mostly the ones with sonny chiba, who played hattori hanzo in them and in kill bill) as the basis for all the fighting at the end. those japanese movies were in black and white. thats why the fighting was so cheesy and the blood was so over-exaggerated.
also the movie was split in two because both vol. 1 and 2 were filmed at the same time as one movie, but it was to long so it had to be cut in half. the same thing they did to the origional star wars trilogy.
