We used to get tons of power outages whenever the summer storms would come in. The unfortunate thing would be when it happened during rush hour and the traffic lights would go out. And then, after spending two hours just trying to travel 4 miles home, you find out that the power surge has tripped the ups on your computers...which were only rated for an hour.

I must sing the praises, however, of the brainiac who finally realized to put the power and telecom cables underground so that they were not susceptible to strong winds, lightning strikes, flying cows due to tornadoes, etc.

Puzzle, my neck of the woods here in NoVa still sees tons of outages whenever the wind blows. You must be in the rich part! :P

I wish they would add up all the overtime costs for linemen and replacement transformers and new telephone poles and tell me when they equal the cost of burying the powerlines. I'm sure it wouldn't take too many storms for this to make sense.

I love it when the power goes out. One of the best things to do then is start a fire and read a book. At least thats what I do.

That huge blackout a few years ago was awesome. Because no one had any power (except for the hoispitals and such), there was no light polution and it was dark enough to see the stars.
