Hmm. Haven't done one of these in a while. Picked up two DVDs a coupla days ago. Haven't done that in a while too. I think the last two that i bought were the Ultimate Dawn Of The Dead set and the Clerks X set. And that was quite a while ago. Haven't been spending much on DVDs because i've been saving up for all the big holiday videogame releases i guess. I should probably update <A HREF="/dvd.html">my list</a> to reflect my new purchases.

I'm thinking about getting either Metal Gear Solid 3 or Ghost Recon 2 today. Not sure yet. Although i could probably just hold off on Ghost Recon 2 and get it for free from this guy that added me to his xbox live friends list (he's a fellow fubar visitor actually). He works for Ubisoft and was telling me about how he wants to send me a game for free. Either Ghost Recon 2 or Prince Of Persia 2. Haha. If i do end up buying GR2, then i guess i'll choose POP 2 if he's actually serious about it.

Anyhow i picked up The Chronicles of Riddick (Unrated Director's Cut of course) and Before Sunset.

Got a bit confused over at Best Buy while i was picking out a copy of Riddick because they had not two, but three different versions of the same movie. The theatrical PG-13 cut, the unrated cut and a special Best Buy package that includes a second DVD (althought it doesn't actually <i>say</i> there's an extra DVD in there) with about an hour of extra.. extras. If you're thinking about picking it up, look for that third version. Makes the DVD worth buying since the regular edition has some pretty shitty extras. That second "Exclusive Best Buy Bonus Content" DVD is actually pretty good. Makes it worth buying if you're on the fence about it. Plus you could probably still pick it up for 16 bucks (before they bump up the price to 24 bucks at the end of the week).

They added about 15 minutes more to the unrated cut. Alternate lines (more swearing), more subplots and more uncut violence (decapitation!). Good stuff. I hope the DVD sells well enough to warrant a sequel. Because that's how this movie got made. Pitch Black wasn't successful at the box office but did big business on DVD. TCOR did pretty poor earlier this year so it probably won't get a sequel unless it does well in DVD sales. I hope it does. The ending in TCOR sets up what could be an interesting trilogy (if it ever gets made).

I've been waiting for Before Sunset to come out on DVD. Never got around to catching it in theaters this summer but now that i have, i just have to say wow. I love love <i>love</i> this movie. You're gonna have to have seen Before Sunrise to be able to enjoy Before Sunset though. I won't bore you with the plot summaries (you can look them up over <A HREF="http://www.thatsjustnotright.com/indire ... e_sun.html" target="_blank">here</a> and <A HREF="http://www.thatsjustnotright.com/indire ... unset.html" target="_blank">here</a> if you're interested) but if you like Richard Linklater's work and don't mind watching movies that's just 100% talking (if you liked Waking Life, then you'll probably love these two movies even more), give Before Sunrise and Before Sunset a chance.

I'd love to get opinions on what you think of these two movies if you've already seen them.

Oh and take a look at <A HREF="http://sensasian.com/cgi-bin/sensasian. ... w/V10019-D" target="_blank">this</A>.

The Infernal Affairs Trilogy 8 DVD set. Which includes a 5 hour cut of all three movies, chronologically cut together. The set costs about 80 - 100 bucks (depending on <A HREF="<A HREF="http://www.thatsjustnotright.com/indire ... w/V10019-D" target="_blank">where you buy it</A>). Now i just have to decide on whether i should get this or the 10 disc Matrix trilogy set.

Finally, i'd just like to plug <A HREF="http://www.thatsjustnotright.com/indire ... ohfive.com" target="_blank">sevenohfive.com</A>. If you couldn't care less about all that DVD talk up there then at least entertain yourselves by checking out <A HREF="http://www.thatsjustnotright.com/indire ... ohfive.com" target="_blank">these guys</A>. Some of you probably have seen their work before but if you haven't, you owe it to yourself to check out some of their <A HREF="http://www.thatsjustnotright.com/indire ... ovies.html" target="_blank">shorts</a>. These guys are HILARIOUS.

I recommend watching:

<li><A HREF="http://www.thatsjustnotright.com/indire ... l/tcs.html" target="_blank">Three Card Studs</A>
<li><A HREF="http://www.thatsjustnotright.com/indire ... marks.html" target="_blank">Skid Marks</A>
<li><A HREF="http://www.thatsjustnotright.com/indire ... l/cb1.html" target="_blank">Cop Block</a>
<li><A HREf="http://www.thatsjustnotright.com/indire ... /sttf.html" target="_blank">Sack To The Future</A>
<li><A HREF="http://www.thatsjustnotright.com/indire ... aldate.php" target="_blank">Virtual Date 3.0</A>

In that order.

If you don't laugh at least once during any of those shorts, then you probably have no sense of humor and eat small babies. Heartless humorless bastards.

Lemme know which ones you liked best.

I like Linklater (Dazed and Confused is greatness) but Before Sunset is strictly for girls and girly men!

what! before sunset (and sunrise) are teh bestest!!!!! everybody should watch it.

i totally identified with julie delpy's character in sunset because i've been in so many lousy relationships just like her character. so her dialogue really struck close to home for me. yep.

i havent seen dazed and confused yet. i'll wait for the criterion DVD. the bare bones one that's out right now sucks.

edit: actually i confused dazed and confused with slacker. i dont think there'll be a criterion dazed and confused. there's one for slacker though (which i also havent seen)

btw, this will be the best movie ever:

I LOVE Dazed and Confused! That is an amazing movie. I want to be Jason London's character in that film. I really want to see the Before... movies too.

And Justin, why are you even THINKING of getting a Matrix set??? We should all be boycotting the crapness of the last two movies. I accept that basically all movies are made for commercial reasons, but to completely screw up an existing movie for the blatant purpose of cashing in its amazing success really pisses me off.

I am dying to see Infernal Affairs, btw.

I had the Chronicles of Riddick VCD since like June, but just watched it a few days ago. It actually didn't suck. Pretty good, pretty good. If I were the type of person to buy every movie I ever liked a little, I'd definitely get it.

But as it is I only own 4 movie dvd's. One of them (Starsky & Hutch) just because it was only $5. And of those 4, I've only actually watched one of them.

Games > DVDs

And The Pacifier looks like it'll be the best movie since Mr. Nanny. Except Hulk Hogan is waaaay cooler than Vin Diesel.

i actually got to meet richard linklater in Austin when i was going to school at UT. He's a smart motherfucker, and i was talking to him after a screening of Waking Life at alamo drafthouse. After watching that movie we had a pretty interesting philosophical discussion. Too bad I smoke lots of pot, or i could remember what was said. I told him i thought Slacker was good but weird, he said "yeah so did I".

on another note HL2, GTA:SA, and Halo 2 have hurt me a little in the wallet area of my pants. MGS3 is gonna have to wait till christmas. wtf am i gonna do about GT4? GOD DAMN AMERICAN CONSUMERISM!!!

I just saw Chronicles of Riddick for the first time, about an hour ago. It was so much better than I expected.

Not so great acting, but the plot and action were just amazing. One thing I realized more than once during the movie, was this: everyone needs to watch this movie on a 30 inch TV or bigger. SO MUCH DETAIL. At some points there were so many things happening on screen, I was happy I was watching it on a 47 inch widescreen plasma.

I dunno if its worth OWNING, but I will be making a DVD burnt copy, cuz I'm positive I will want to watch it again in the next few weeks. Wow. Really impressive. That movie should hold me over until November 30th when Spiderman 2 comes out.

SUPERBIT MOTHERFUCKER. DTS. CELEBRATION, BITCHES.

10 discs, that's like 75-90 gigs of stuff. I'd think it'd include anything and everything even remotely related to the Matrix.

...it does include Anamatrix doesn't it?

Before Sunset has been the best film I've seen at the cinema (translation: movie I've seen at the movie theater) this year, by quite a distance. I was unsure about seeing it, because Before Sunrise has one of the best unresolved endings ever, and a sequel would have to ruin that. But when I did was completely blown away, beautifully made, acted and shot, with an ending to rival the first. Girly? Maybe. Amazing? Certainly. Highly recommended.

I've been trying to work out what the crack is with the new version of Dazed and Confused, and it seems that the original plan was for an all-singing all-dancing new version with commentary, documentary etc, but that Linklater and Universal fell out. This is a letter from Linklater posted on Wiley Wiggins website (Mitch from D&C - www.wileywiggins.com):

Hi Wiley,

Just to let you know - there has been some trouble with Universal regarding their upcoming release of the DAZED AND CONFUSED DVD. I feel like I'm in an 11-year echo chamber with these idiots. There was a cool disk in the works with extended interviews, Kahane Corn's documentary MAKING DAZED, footage from the reunion, etc. but it turns out that these won't be on it any longer because, after all these years, they're rushing the title out to make some sort of deadline. Because of this I will not be doing a commentary or helping with anything else.

I wanted everybody to know the scoop and that I am pushing Universal to license the title to the Criterion Collection in a year or so and they would put out a fantastic disk.

I am withholding doing any press on the Universal disk and will not be affiliated with it in any way because of their continuing lameness toward this title.

Hope all's well in your world. Take care,

Rick

The new version (Flashback Edition) DOES have a new remastered anamorphic transfer and a DTS / Dolby Digital soundtrack, plus some deleted scenes, but that's about it, so I guess the choice is buy now, or hold out for the possibility of more to come. Hope that helps.

One last thought on Linklater - how did a director that good make a film as bad as School of Rock?

Are there any plans for a Region 1 or Region 0 release of the Infernal Affairs trilogy?
