Actually that depends on which religion is right. We could end up with one of those 'everything is predetermined' ones and it doesn't matter what any of us did here on earth...eamon angelface wrote:I'm not baptized so I'm not obligated to adhere to the rules of any higher being because I'm already guaranteed a private escort past the line straight into the deepest pits of hell.
77% of Americans say they're Christian. Of course, alot of them never go to church anymore, etc. etc. ...I think that many people keep saying it as if it would help them later, even if it's not true.
Kinda like the whole "Americans go to church less year, but more and more believe in angels".
Maybe it's the spirituality melting away, but people don't know quite what to label as "human spirit" yet (or maybe they're not comfortable doing so).
At my break time, at work, there are four people that don't smoke (i.e. we actually go to the "break room" instead of outside). One's a Christian, one's a Jew, one's a scientologist, and then there's me, the atheist. It makes for interesting conversations.

It's really because they don't want to lose face with their friends and family.efilflah wrote:I'm basing this mainly on people I've met/know (My mother being one of the crazy fools) and pretty much every one of them are adamant that they will never leave their spouses because of religious reasons.Seriously wrote:I think a majority of Christians could rationalize divorce just fine, actually. Even some of the hellfire ones.
That's not to say that some won't when they catch the other half in bed with the nanny for the 5th time, but there are just as many denial types out there who will make excuses forever if it means holding the family together.
If you get divorced you are seen as had having failed in a marriage so you suck or the person in it perceives it that way.
The religion is the excuse, to be seen as a failure by outside viewers is the reason because some people would rather be in an unhappy place if it makes them look like the perfect family on the outside.
I know I'm supposed to do something, but fuck knows what it is.

My girlfriend says she's catholic. Except she doesn't believe in any of it, and only goes to church like once a year. I always call bullshit when she says she's catholic. What she means is her family is catholic.
This is literally how the conversation goes almost every time.
Her: "I'm catholic."
Me: "No, You're not!"
Her: "Yeah I am, just don't believe in all the crap about jesus and stuff."
Me: "So...You're catholic, but you don't believe in jesus? You know what the makes you? JEWISH!"
Then she tries to hit me.
