These are famous for housing the actual castle of a fantastically vilified national hero of this region.

Fagaras Mountains in Transylvania, Romania.

Very close. Its a little different region though.
The
actual castle. Not the b and b that sells wine and t-shirts.
UPDATE:
Fuckit. Close enough. Those are the southern Carpathian Alps about 300km northwest of Bucharest near the Arges Valley.

Well, I got the name of the mountains from these guys:
http://birthing-journey.blogspot.com/20 ... -vlad.html
Before we went all the way up we stopped in Poienari, where the real Prince Vlad Tepes castle ruins are.
Doesn't sound like they went to a B&B to me...

Well it depends on which castle they're calling "his".
Is it the one he died in?
Was imprisoned for 7 years in?
From what I know the castle that was considered his home is not the one tourists get to see anymore because the Romanian government had to hand it back over to a private owner a few years ago.
Either way good guess. You win.

The history of Western Europe and most likely the entire world was forever changed by an epic naval battle here.

Battle of Salamis, fought just outside Athens, Greece?

Absolutely right!
According to Wiki:
The battle of Salamis has been described by many historians as the single most significant battle in human history. The Greek victory protected the nascent and singular traditions of democracy and individual rights, as well as guarding Greek philosophy and culture. This meant the eventual flowering of Western culture, which would likely have been snuffed out completely, had the Persians overrun Greece. Due to the enormous and wide-ranging influence of Western culture on all of human civilization, as well as the huge success of Western culture in its own right, it is literally possible that the world today would be utterly and basically different had the Greeks lost at Salamis.

Typical. Angelbaby blocks me from this game CONSTANTLY. Here it is Friday day, I have time to devote and play this game (for a change) and she has not posted a location up. She will, and I'm working this evening, all day tomorrow and spending Sunday madly trying to pack for going out of town.
She has a magical talent to prevent me from every playing this game. Even the first time I won with Area 51, it was my duty to give Dex his rightful turn.
>_< Goddamn gook.
