The Alethiometer

Post by Seriously » 25 May 2007 15:37

It comes out this December.

They're cutting out the religious references.

And replacing it with some sort of symbology.

Sadface. That doesn't bode well. Nor does saying "Oh look we made Lord of the Rings we know how to do these sorts of things".

It is pretty though. And it looks like they've got the dæmon shifting down.

Which, I thought the word was pronounced "damn-ons" as opposed to demons, which is why Pullman went through the trouble of putting "æ" as opposed to "e".

Anyways. This will probably be a decent movie, unless you read the book.

Sadface.

Next up: The Æsahættr (apparently pronounced "Es-sa-het-ter" and not "As-sa-hat-ter").

Sraf Seer stays the same.

EDIT:

I just did the get your dæmon thing on the movie page.

It's a goddamn spider.

Fuck.

I wasn't expecting, y'know, like a beautiful wildcat or a proud eagle, but I was expecting a vertebrate.

When I did it as Sylar he gets a fucking ermine (You like meeting new people -- Strongly Agree). But I get a spider.

I don't see how they can tear out the religious themes from the movies. Hell, the story is about as anti-God and anti-religion as you can get. They trailer looks pretty damn good though, and daemon shape-shifting is perfect. I really hope New Line does this right! His Dark Materials are some of my favourite books.

I got a Chimp. Yay!

Dunno...Wasn't too impressed with the LOTR name-dropping in the trailer. Sure, it looks ok, but obviously they don't expect it to do well if they're gonna do that.

Anyway, I got a mouse.

I don't think I've ever heard of this book. Which kinda takes me aback.

Wow...that's quite a cast though. Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman, Eva Green, Eric Bana, Kevin Bacon, Sam Elliot, John Hurt. Interesting to have Daniel and Eva appearing together again so soon.

At any rate, I am apparently softly spoken, fickle, responsible, passive, assertive...according to them, a fox.

From wikipedia:
The superficial resemblance of protagonist Lyra Belacqua's alethiometer (depicted on the book's cover) to a large compass caused the North American publishers of Northern Lights to retitle the book The Golden Compass.
Americans are so damned dumb. You'd think we'd get an education after Harry Potter and the Philosopher's...er, Sorcerer's Stone.

Of course you are a fox... you are Vixen.

I scored as a Ariel Wildcat Daemon. Passive, softly spoken, relaxed, inquisitive.

I went through the site some more, and they can't seem to pronounce dæmon consistently.

I was always pretty sure it was pronounced Day-mon. But then again, I thought the girl's name was Lee-ra.

If you haven't read His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, I strongly recommend giving it a chance. It's written as a fantasy trilogy for children but I know plenty of adults who love it.

And I thought that they changed the name to "The Golden Compass" to highlight what the device did. It guides the kid like a compass would... and it's gold... or something.

Everytime I try to buy this set of books they're out of stock.

Still, I actually read Eragon before going in to watch the film.

God, was THAT a prison rape and a half.

The film. Not the book.

Really? There's plenty where I am.

I guess there's a lot less people that read where I am. I lose.

Wait.

No.

I don't lose at all.

EDIT:

My set's spines spell out "His Dark Materials" when you put them together.

But what's neater is that one hardcover version of The Amber Spyglass that has the two protaganist surrounded by all of the dead people ever on the cover.

But I didn't get that one because I didn't see it until after.

I got a fox called Mayra.

I remember hearing about these books but dismissed them as kids stuff, etc. The trailer has certainly piqued my interest and I'll most likely check them out now.

And I agree:

Eragon book=pretty cool
Eragon movie=The kid that plays Eragon makes Hayden Christensen look like Marlon Fucking Brando

This trailer is quite a bit better than that other one.

They manage not to mention other fantasy epics at all.

Also: Christopher Lee.

If nothing else I am satisfied they will do right by the Panserbjørn.

Oh and I retook the test and now my dæmon's name is Euthalias and she is a chimpanzee.

So apparently I haven't settled yet.

That's a bit disturbing as I am 24.
