Doomsday

Post by psyper » 12 Aug 2008 22:14

I think we should have a running thread with things that will end life as we know it or the earth etc. what with the LHC being started up and various technologies being developed around the world I think its the best time to start talking about the future (or lack there of) of mankind.

I'll start with this article:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7547251.stm
British Telecom company is installing artificial intelligence in to their networks. Wonder if they will call it skynet...?
Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning.

A few articles I've come across today on my boredom monday at work.

UK's MoD is testing out different robots in a competition in a mock village. One of the robots that caught my eye on bbc news channel was one that hovered - circular in shape it uses a central fan to keep it airborne. All they need to do with this one is attack a laser to the bottom and you have the terminator droid featured in a few of the films.

This one has probably been mentioned a few times before but just to recap - the last of the skynet satellites have been launched. Although the satellites are only designed to pass information between military computers they would help any ai to interface with quite a few computer controlled systems such as the UAV mentioned in this story:

Also worth mentioning (or not) the satellite was launched with another sat onboard called the Turk-, oh sorry, my bad, its called Turksat 3A.

Actually, that looks very similar to the surveillance hover-drones depicted in Dark Angel, which in one ep were modified with machine guns to act as an automated police death squad. :ohnoes:

I thought this thread was about the movie, Doomsday. Which was fucking terrible.

Turns out this thread is about the real end of the world. Which would still be 10 times better than seeing the aforementioned movie for a second time. I'd rather watch a Uwe Boll marathon for 9 months straight than 5 minutes of Doomsday.

Everyone take a shot for every thread before AB makes some snide comment to me!

I watched my new copy of Doomsday just this weekend, and it rocked nearly as much as it did when I saw it in the theater. ^_^

Here's a preemptive "shut" for Dex...

Shut.

I have to rent this again when my lady isn't around. It wasn't her thing, so we shut it off, and she returned it before I could finish watching.

So they still haven't tested the Hadron Collider to recreate a black hole. Nice that every article tries to spin it like they have. Headlines like "Success!"

Yes, I agree, Smash. People walking around saying "well, I guess we're still alive" just pisses me off on so many levels.
