Sleep.

Post by gulliver » 14 Aug 2007 07:48

How many hours per day of sleep do you generally get?

I'm a bit of a night owl but have to rise at 6:30. So I generally get about 5 hours sleep most nights.

On the weekends Im so tired from the past week i'll sleep for ten hours if get the chance.

I'm a lot like you actually. In fact, many of my friends jokingly call me a vampire.

I typically get about 3-4 hours of sleep per night during the work week, but I've been known to refill my sleep reservoir on the weekends with 10 hours a night.

Also, I once read that the average sleep cycle is about 3 hours, so it's best to sleep in multiples of 3. Basically this means, that if you have the option of getting 5 hours or 3 hours, you're better off taking the 3, cause you'll feel more rested when you wake up at the end of your cycle.

That's weird.

Someone told me the sleep cycle was 4 hours so it was best to sleep in multiples of 4.

Maybe that's why even though I get 8 hours a day more often than not, I still feel fucked the next morning.

I generally go to bed on workdays in between 12am to 1 am, and I get out of bed about 10 to 9 the next day, but wake up around 8 ish and just lay there looking at that evil clock.

I don't have to be in until 10 and tbh, it's so relaxed I could turn up at 11am every day and no1 would care/notice.

Like efilflah, I also find that I'm overly tired and a horrible cranky bastard if I get 8 hours during the week. Something to do with the time of waking perhaps? If I get my 10 hours on the weekend and wake up at like 12:30 or something, then Im ok.

Something that has been bothering me though lately and something that has only been happening this year is that I sometimes fall asleep for an hour or two in the evening. Might have something to do with the gym but why now?

Fuck I'm getting old!

I believe you hit REM at like 2 hours through the 4th hour. So I could buy that.

I'm whacked when it comes to sleep, and it turns out my mother, niece and sister all have the same issue as I do. I have a hard time staying asleep. In general, I can tell when that's going to happen, though not always. In cases where I am stressed or in desperate need of sleep, I'll take a Tylenol PM to help.

If I ever off myself, you can be assured that it was in large part due to an excessive lack of good sleep. I get really sensitive (paranoid) about it because when I was 21 I had about a 8 month period of extreme lack of sleep (every hour I'd just keep waking up). Near the end I was extremely loopy...

..A dramatic job change threw me out of my cycle. Thankfully.

I get as little as no sleep, as much as 6 hours, depending on the day.

Damn.

I sleep like a wet log for at least 8 hours a night.

My dog even gave up trying to wake me up in the morning. My gf takes him out when he wakes up because it's useless trying to wake me. I go into a coma.

Only time it's ever been a problem is when sleepwalking. Or sleep running. I ran into a half open door when I was a teenager. My dad found me in the morning asleep on the floor with a big bloody red line down my forehead and face.

REM, naturally, is my favorite band.

And I'd have to give the win to a really obscure song of theirs titled "Fretless". But if it was more mainstream, I think I'd stick wtih the acoustic version of "Pop Song '89'. But since people probably still don't know that, I'd give in and say "Losing My Religion".

Smash remembers REM before they were big.

Everyone else: REM was a band that was around when you were either being conceived or still a toddler.

Not just Smash, Eamon.

Though I don't share the same love of the band, I certainly remember well when they first became popular.

All the people who mention they still feel tired after an 8-hour night of sleep should try 6 hours for a few nights and see if that doesn't help.

If it does, you're welcome. ^_^

I'd be happy for 4 hours of continuous sleep.

You hit REM once per cycle, which is just about an hour, plus or minus a few minutes depending on the person. The longer you sleep, the better the REM, though.

If you're having trouble sleeping because of stress, try valerian. It's an herbal supplement that is very gentle, yet quite effective. The only drawback that I can see is the dirty-sock odor, but that is only an issue until you swallow the capsules. It's especially good at helping to reign in all those thoughts that keep your brain too busy to sleep.
