Concealed Firearms on Campus

I was on farcebook and I saw this.


It is a website advocating the right for those that have concealed weapon permits to be able to carry on college campuses.

Now, to get a concealed carry permit I understand you have to be over 21 and have a clean record with respect to both Criminal Justice and Mental Health institutions, and you have to take classes.


I'm sure the proving system is plenty rigorous, but I'm just not sure what this will solve.

Of course, I'm biased on things like this.



Now, this whole thing is a response to VT. I am however doubting that two lone gunmen would have cancelled each other out.


I dunno, in my mind potential heroism is figuring prominently in the minds of these people.

Any other sides to this I am not considering or did I just find a particularly stupid website?

My dad always said "it's better to have something and not need it than to need it and not have it".

That being said I don't even own a gun, a gun permit, or even a fucking slingshot. Because I don't think I should.

This all seems like the usual patchwork and political sidelining. Does no one care that VT kid was mentally ill and was extremely scared and unhappy? No one ever wants to address the actual problem. It's always easier to "raise awareness" and march and make yourself feel better.

"What are you guys doing marching today?"

"We're raising awareness for some fucking cause!"

"Are you fixing anything?"

"Nope we're not smart enough but hopefully someone else is!"

So now everyone can take a side and hold never ending debates on the issue without ever really doing anything. Great. Argue back and forth until the next poor fucker who is so full of self loathing and hatred cracks like a twig and opens fire. Or maybe he won't be able to get a gun so he'll have to build a bomb and blow everything up? Or maybe he won't have internet access and won't know how to build a bomb and he'll just go door to door stabbing people?

The important thing is that a bunch of roid riddled rednecks can now feel a little bit safer with their Desert Eagles nestled safely next to their shrunken balls.

The argument that America is free and it's a right is funny. Let anarchy reign then and we'll see where you're standing at the end of it. I mean if you have a right to bear arms shouldn't you be allowed a missile launcher? I want to be able to walk around a campus with a nuclear bomb on my back. It's the only way I'll ever really feel safe.

I'm always amazed that the feminist angle of this isn't raised more. I mean, rapes on campus are orders of magnitude more prolific than campus shooting sprees. And a handgun is the one sure way to equalize the sexes when it comes to self-defense.

But then again, like campus shooting sprees that are stopped by students with guns, they are a dog-bites-man story.

Plus, I'm biased too. I've had my CCW since I turned 21, and carried while a student at Uni.

Yes, a CCW gun weilder would have made short work of the story at VT. That's a fact. In order to obtain your permit, you have to display proficiency with said weapon. Part of the training stresses proper application and judgement on situations.

However, what are the statistical odds that a CCW holder would have been present when this went down? Pretty slim, I think. That's like saying if we had more boat licenses during the 2004 tsunami more people could have fled on a ship... ... it's just a superfluous argument.

There was an obvious, in hindsight sadly, flaw in the system that allowed that douchebag to obtain guns. Instead of political lobby groups trying to spin things we should focus on fixing those gaping holes. Both sides are guilty, within like 6 hours NRA was issuing press statements and Brady-Bill supporters were using this as a rallying cry to ban guns all together.

It really comes down to the point Jon Stewart made when he went on Hannity and Colmes' Crossfire. Both sides have warped the issue so that no one is even really looking at it. A very troubled person was left uncared for and was capable of obtain weapons. This shouldn't be about guns or no guns.
