Well it’s 2004. Well. It’s been 2004 for the past 14 or so hours of me but some of you on the west coast are still in 2003. Haha.
West coast, East coast? I’m from the FAR EAST coast baby.
Speaking of which. I’m leaving for Singapore today. I have a flight out at around 5 and i’m gonna be in Singapore til the 3rd. From which i’ll be leaving for Michigan from there on the 3rd, and arriving, on the 3rd. Where it’ll already be the 4th everywhere else but there. Wacky time zones.
Oh and in case you didn’t notice the site died again for about a day or two. Don’t look at me, i didn’t do anything. Oh and the forums seem to be broken too. I haven’t had time to fix it yet but i’ll probably get around to doing so once i get settled in in Michigan. Besides, who uses those forums anyway.
Mac geeks: I need help with webcams. I have OSX Jaguar but i prefer using OS9. Why? Because i’m nitpicky and i think OSX is slow (yes. i think it’s slow and it’s not because i’m on a shitty machine. i’m on a 2001 500Mhz PowerBook G4). I’m thinking of buying a new webcam. My old one sucks plus i gave it to my girlfriend. Now i need a new one. And none of that USB crap. I want a firewire one.
I’m thinking about getting one of these Fire-i things someday.
Either that or the infinitely more sexier but more expensiveApple iSight.
I’d much rather get the iSight but the thing is, does it run on OS9? Because i refuse to use OSX. Plus, does the iSight work with Yahoo? Or is it iChat AV only?
The only other alternative is the iBot. But it looks gay (gayer than the Fire-i) and it’s probably the shittiest of the three (but is proven to work with anything).
So yeah, my first choice would be to get the ultra sexy and ultra pricey iSight. But if it doesn’t work on OS9, i’m not getting it.
Second choice would be that Fire-i thing.
Third would be the gay iBot.
Input plz!

Well anyhow, i guess i’ll update again once i’m in Michigan. Leave me lots of sexy comments to read for when i get back online again.

OS X is the FUTURE! OS 9 is dead,
switch. now. bnlil bitch.
oh yeah, 500mhz g4 powerbook is a piece of shit. I am running an ibook and it has more power than that, Jeez. If you upgrade your ram……you shouldnt have any problem running OS X. Try buying a gig.
Isight? Does not work on OS 9. Goto X. Its sweet.
#2 | Comment by pacgod — January 1, 2004 @ 2:26 pm
X? never! not until it launches apps ‘instantly’ like on 9 instead of having that stupid bouncing icon crap in the dock.
and shut up. i know my powerbook is old.
=(

You are sadly mistaken, Justin. Any Mac operating system before X sucks ass.
Panther > XP Pro >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Windows 95 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (keep going) >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mac OS 9 and below.

Why use Mac at all?
if you want good apps and compatability then use Windows and if you want speed use Linux.
Macs are good if your a teenage girl that wants a ‘puter to match her My Little Pony

Personally, I am using Mac OS X 10.2 on my 400 MHz G3 Desktop, and it’s fast enough for eveything I do. Also, it’s stable enough that I usually leave everything running for two-three weeks at a time, so I don’t care how long safari takes to start up. Seriously, give OS X a chance, and you will like it. Folks can call Macs pansyboxen if they want. As somebody who has oodles of Sun hardware running both Solaris and Linux, MIPS hardware, a VAX, several PC’s and has built several functional units of a CPU using only transistors and wires from scratch, I feel thoroughly qualified to say, "FOAD, you poopie head, I like my mac!"
OS X is rather sensitive to how much RAM is in the system, but RAM is pretty cheap these days, and you will want a lot if you are using video, regardless of the operating system.
To the poster who loves debian : please don’t forget the fink project, which ported apt-get to OS X, so you can easily install all the nice GNU apps that you want from debian, built for Darwin. They run under X11 in Mac OS X — It’s very slick. I’m a GIMPaholic.
Returning to the question at hand… video under OS 9, on a Powerbook, using firewire. Naturally, my first reccomendation would be an analog capture card and a real camera, but that would only be aplicable on a desktop system. This will give you very high quality. I assume the reason you want to avoid USB is because you want very high quality, and since firewire offers so much more bandwidth, you will expect to see noticeably improved quality. Will you be using the webcam for video chat? If so, remember that the critical measure of peak quality is the narrowest pipe, not the fattest one. Thus, if you are using a 1 megabit DSL line, your USB webcam is still able to send the computer eleven times more data than can actually be sent to the person at the other end, meaning that firewire won’t necessarily improve anything. If you just want a video camera, and won’t be using it on the net, I reccomend getting a decent analog camera, and a firewire codec box to convert the video to DV format in real time. Use the analog camera to shoot whatever it is you are shooting, and then capture. The other option is just getting a DV camera, which would connect directly to the firewire port.
So, yeah, thar’s my random thoughts on the subject. I am not from the south.
#30 | Comment by foodie — January 5, 2004 @ 1:34 pm
ok, now that’s what i call random thoughts =D
didn’t know about fink project =S
since we are on the subject, isn’t os x based on *bsd? i think mac os 9 was built from scratch, correct if im wrong here
#31 | Comment by vhw — January 5, 2004 @ 2:06 pm
ditto foodie.
#32 | Comment by sexcrazedweazel — January 5, 2004 @ 2:55 pm
Mac OS 9 was indeed all in-house Apple code, but I’m not sure that "built from scratch" is quite correct. Mac OS 9 decended pretty directly from the System 1.0 codebase. The original code was all written in assembly for the original Macintosh, but around System 4, Apple started to phase in parts of the OS written in higher level languages. During the System 7 years, Apple came out with the power macs, switching from m68k CPU’s to the newer Power PC’s. At this point, a lot of the OS was rewritten for Power PC, but some of the OS was still crufty old m68k assembly, running under an emulation layer so that it would work on the new CPU architecture. Systems 8 and 9 strove to eliminate most of the 68k code, and were largely powerPC native, but as I understand it, old bits of cruft still remained. So, no, Mac OS 9 wasn’t written from scratch after throwing away the 8.x codebase, it was actually a monstrous glomming together of 20 years of Apple code, which bowed under its own weight and history. This is why OS 9 is considered the stanic crappy companion of Satan.
Now, don’t forget Apple’s side projects with regard to the OS. There were several. Copland was supposed to be System 8. Copland was going to be when Apple threw away all the old code, did everything right, and started from scratch. It never materialised. Apple also had Rhapsody, which almost materialised, Pink, which nobody even remembers, and Taligent, which was less close to being a real thing than Pink. Somewhere in this mess, Apple bought NeXT, and brought back Steve Jobs. NeXT used an operating system *very* similar to what we now see in OS-X, which is a rather complicarted OS.
The kernel, or heart of OS X is a mach microkernel. This is not from BSD. The BSD’s all have their own kernel, and don’t use Mach.
All the UNIX userland utilities are pretty much straight from BSD. That means, when you use terminal, and run command line programs, they come from BSD.
Thge GUI system, aqua, is Apple’s own work. It does, however, borrow quite a lot from NeXT. I’m not sure if NeXT code was used directly, or just for inspiration.
Aqua uses two primary API’s for programs. "Cocoa" is essentially just the NeXT API, and even uses "NS" in defining parts of the API. i.e. NSApplication, NSWindow, etc. Cocoa programs are written in Objective C, which is a fucked up language that is also hella cool.
"Carbon" is the other natively supported Application API. This is Apple’s own work, and I am less familiar with it. It is basically a spiritual relative of the classic Mac OS API, except gussied up for the new millenium. Carbon is a C API.
There is a third API under Mac OS X, but it isn’t a first class citizen. The "Classic" environment is really just a Mac OS X program that runs Mac OS 9 in a window, so that you can run old programs. It isn’t exactly an emulator, but rather it virtualises the CPU, so it’s faster than a true Mac emulator would be.
So, that mini history lesson in Mac OS clear things up for you? To answer your question in sumarry, if you are on the command line, yes, Mac OS X looks a lot like any other BSD, but there are a variety of technologies from a wide variety of sources that went in to making Mac OS X, invcluding Mach, BSD, some GNU utilities, home brewed apple stuff, and quite of lot of Next goodies. Some people have called Mac OS X just the latest version of NextStep. IMHO, it’s pretty fair.
So, where are the pictures of Alexis Bledel. You have a picture of her at the top of the main page, but you never post nudie pictures of her. I keep coming to this site hoping for Alexis… Or maybe Mandy Moore, who gets some pics posted, but not enough, either. I mean, seriously, if I had a choice between a good pizza and sleeping with Alexis Bledel, I’d totally not go for the pizza, even if I had skipped lunch. And, I really like food. That’s just how cute she is.

Do enlighten me bligity as I wasn’t aware that momma jokes could come off more than one way.
A perfectly sarcastic comment of mine was met with, "Who the fuck are you". I felt my retort perfectly suited such remarks from a Linux and Windows loving homo like Eddie.
