The Chronicles of Riddick

Man, i liked this movie a lot. It was pretty damn satisfying. Good stuff. Vin Diesel is badass and Alexa Davalos is a hot piece of ass. Damn hot in the movie. Can’t say the same thing about her in real life (from the pictures i’ve seen anyway) but in the movie, she was fucking sexy as hell. She’s like an even sexier version of Milla Jovovich. I think she was on Buffy once. Or Angel. I wouldn’t know. I never watched those shows.

Some complaints though.

They cut out a lot of shit in the movie. You can tell that the first cut was probably a hard R. And there are a couple of scenes missing. Scenes that were in the trailer but weren’t in the movie. If you’ve seen it, go check out the trailer again and you’ll notice the lost scenes and lines of dialogue. Don’t you hate it when they do that?

Good thing the DVD will be a director’s cut. Hopefully rated R or Unrated. The theatrical cut was just too kid friendly. I wanna see more gore and hear more F words.

I don’t know if i’ll want to see another sequel though. I thought that the movie ended extremely fucking well. They did leave room for another sequel and it would be very interesting to see where things can go from here (considering how this one ended) but i feel that it’ll be one sequel too many (ala The Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions). I’m torn. I guess it’ll all depend on the box office receipts. We’ll see how it goes this Monday.

By the way, it helps a little if you’ve played Escape from Butcher Bay. And seen Pitch Black before you see Chronicles. There’s a couple of throwbacks and in jokes in there.

Oh and the female merc was pretty hot too (again, in the movie). Reminded me of Rhona Mitra.

*thumbs up*

  1. Good review man, I havent seen it yet, but I was a big fan of Pitch Black. I thought this one was suppose to be a prequel? (Not that that will stop me from seeing it)

  5. yeah i thought it was a prequel too but i got it mixed up with butcher bay for some reason. butcher bay is the prequel to pitch black. chronicles is 5 years after pitch.

i hate seeing movies in theaters too. i prefer dvd.

  6. Better than van Helsing? That’s not saying a lot.

Speaking of van Helsing, Underworld is a better take on the warewolf vs vampires theme. Both feature Kate Beckinsale in the female lead. Sexy british accent and cool costume design in Underworld, yay! Retarded east european accent in van Helsin, bleh.

  7. better in terms of summer movies so far i think. i dunno. i havent seen van helsing. no desire to do so. maybe on dvd. maybe not. then again i do have both mummy movies and scorpion king on dvd. i guess one more stephen sommers movie won’t hurt.

only a couple more weeks till spider-man 2! i already have my (free) ticket thanks to the deluxe edition dvd set i bought.

  8. Chronicles Of Riddick made an estimated $10 million on Friday and should make around $28 million for the weekend. This movie will struggle to make 95 million.

With a production/marketing cost of $140 million, there will be no more Riddick movies.

  10. And from what I read online, they wanted to make a trilogy of Riddick movies.

Or have they already with the game and intermediary animated short…..?

Why does everybody want to make trilogies these days? Jason X was supposed to be the first in a trilogy, then there was that Matrix fiasco.

I blame Star Wars! Fucking Ewoks.

  11. man i hope u are kidding with the jason x trilogy (the first one was hot garbage) and the bitch that owns the theater here chose stepford wives over riddick.i had to drive an hour away to see the movie but it was worth it. I cant wait for the dvd!

  12. vin diesel is gay and so are you, justin

    #12 | Comment by vhw — June 13, 2004 @ 11:21 am

  13. Nope. It’s not a joke. The director and producers talked about how they envisioned a Jason X trilogy in some of the special features on the DVD. The first movie, Jason X, tells how Jason is brought to this other planet. In the second, he kills on the other planet. And then in the third, the authorities catch Jason, and bring him back to the newly terraformed earth and drop him back at crystal lake.

I doubt that this will ever happen though. Unless they do a direct-to-video route ala Starship Troopers 2.

  14. Don’t forget that this Tuesday the animated DVD comes out The Chronicles Of Riddick: Dark Fury. I’ll be getting it. From what I’ve read, up to thirty minutes of footage was cut out, the studio wanted a more action orientated flick, less plot. Grand. The girl you mentioned is Christina Cox, the female merc – Eve Logan. She does look a bit like Rhona Mitra. And now some pictures of Kyra/Jack (Alexa Davalos)

Oh yeah, the deluxe unrated edition of The Girl Next Door DVD comes out on August 24th, $27.98. Hubba. Hubba.

  15. I agree with seeing movies on DVD. In my town we have two movie theaters near by. One is upscale and very nice where all the preppy rich people go and the other is dirty and smells and looks ghetto. So for some unknown reason the nice theater isn’t showing the chronicles of riddick. Well, in my ignorance I go to the smelly theater with the stains on the seats and the glue-like floor. It was probably 85 degrees in there because I don’t think the theater owner, who was probably from Botswana, ever heard of air conditioning. So me and my friends sit back and try not to worry about the substances leaking through our clothing from the contaminated seats and start to watch the movie. About half way through the movie when the mercs are taking Riddick to Crematoria on that sled we hear this stereotypically loud black woman’s cell phone ring. If you’ve ever seen scary movie you’ll see what’s coming. She proceeds to tell her friend exactly what’s going on in the movie.

Ya know what… I’m tired of telling this. I wanted to rant but I give up. In the end, despite losing 5 pounds in that sauna and picking up a case of meningitis from the seats, the chronicles kicked ass.

"I’m gonna kill you with my tea cup."

  17. im kinda interested in seeing this jus cuz of all the hype its gotten from fubar(aahhh the joys of peer pressure) but im still not sure. The original pitch black was alright but nothing special. if u were to compare it to another movie what would u guys say.

    #17 | Comment by serge — June 13, 2004 @ 3:13 pm

  18. Actually, with this opening, there might very well be another Riddick film. It’s not massive, but it’s very strong. Add in some overseas grosses and it’ll make good money.

    #18 | Comment by Chief — June 13, 2004 @ 3:21 pm

  19. There was one scene with the female merc where she is shooting two guns at once. Is it just me or was that scene spliced together of footage of Michelle Rodriguez from Resident Evil and S.W.A.T.?
Riddick was alright, I’m a big Pitch Black fan which is the only reason I gave this movie the benefit of the doubt and watched it… I enjoyed the story and the action scenes, and it had some cool effects.. but whoever was in charge of the Bruckheimer-esque cheesy one-liners should be ghosted.

  20. i saw riddick and thought it was pretty good, and Alexa Davalos looks like a smaller kick your ass version of Katherine Heigl IMO

    #20 | Comment by rkrispy — June 13, 2004 @ 4:51 pm

  21. katherine heigl? no way! more like a milla jovovich. maybe even a little natalie portman. but only in the movie

dont you hate it when people look better in movies that they do in real life?

i call this the carrie anne moss syndrome. hot in the matrix. not all that hot in anything else (including real life)

but i’d still hit it anyway.

  23. I already saw Dark Fury (one of the benefits of working for BBV). AWESOME animation! And, as expected, it explains quite a bit about how the characters in Chronicles get to where they are. It even introduces one.

If you liked Chronicles, see Dark Fury.

    #23 | Comment by ihatepeople — June 13, 2004 @ 5:41 pm

  24. how long is dark fury? is it just 30 minutes like that shitty ass van helsing cartoon?

only one more blank to fill:

butcher bay – pitch black – ???(dark fury)??? – chronicles of riddick

    #24 | Comment by Justin — June 13, 2004 @ 5:54 pm

  25. Ah yes, Alexa Davalos is hot. I remember her from that "Angel" episode where she had Electric powers or some dealy. Sexy.

And "The Chronicles of Riddick" was average. Nothing mind-blowing. Hope they make the next two (if they do make another two) better.

  26. I always thought Ms. Moss looked better in Memento. I liked her in the original Matrix, but I didn’t like the patent leather catsuit.

Patent leather shoes are fine. So is patent leather lingerie. But not patent leather catsuits.

    I mean, those poor cows.

Vin Diesel is being pummeled by a number of critics for his performance in The Chronicles of Riddick, the sequel to Pitch Black. They’re also hammering the movie. "Riddick-ulous," harrumphs Megan Lehmann in the New York Post.Steven Rea in the Philadelphia Inquirer calls it "an overblown hodgepodge of volcano-baked desertscapes, Egyptoid-gone-baroque architecture, and gladiator-geared storm troopers with goofy headpieces." Most critics agree that the sequel is a shadow of the original. Writes Manohla Dargis in the Los Angeles Times: "Weighted down with money, pretension and Diesel’s tenuous importance … the follow-up to Pitch Black inverts nearly everything that made the first film an effective-enough shocker." And Eleanor Ringel Gillespie in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution announces: "We have our first serious contender for Worst Movie of 2004." But Ty Burr in the Boston Globe observes: "Fans of muscular sci-fi and teenage boys of all ages will probably kick my rating up by at least a star, because, really, Chronicles of Riddick is a perfectly acceptable entry in the summer-behemoth genre."

    #27 | Comment by James — June 14, 2004 @ 9:56 am

  28. Yes Justin, Dark fury is about 33 minutes long.

And there are about 30 minutes of "bonus" materials on the DVD.

This is why I suggest that you rent and not buy Dark Fury unless you are a DIE HARD fan of the series.

  29. I forgot to mention this, providing the movie does well enough; director David Twohy hopes to make a TV series based on the Kyra/Jack character. The lost years for the Sci Fi channel. You can read more about it here. Neat. What I would like to see is a deluxe DVD edition to Below. If you seen it, in the commentary Twohy mentions about a bunch of footage that was cut out , those scenes were not on the deleted section. Anyhow I’m glad there’s a director’s cut of Donnie Darko. I will be buying that expanded version. Oh yeah,
details on the The Girl Next Door DVD. Sway.

  32. i hate vin diesel, and all things realting to the wasteland of a man. He can’t act, he has the emotional range of Steven Segal, and he’s a flat out asshole. I hope he fades in obscurity, like the olsen twins should and the way that so many others have before after they put out tons of shitty crap all the time.
