Figured i’d go see what Michael Moore had to say:
Vacation is Over… an open letter from Michael Moore to George W. Bush
Friday, September 2nd, 2005
Dear Mr. Bush:
Any idea where all our helicopters are? It’s Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina and thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted. Where on earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a drag.
Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could really use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do like helping with national disasters. How come they weren’t there to begin with?
Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then but it was pretty nasty. Eleven people died and, as of today, there were still homes without power. That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you? I know you didn’t want to interrupt your vacation and I know how you don’t like to get bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to and mothers of dead soldiers to ignore and smear. You sure showed her!I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying to Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps. Don’t let people criticize you for this — after all, the hurricane was over and what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike?
And don’t listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers’ budget for New Orleans this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them that even if you hadn’t cut the money to fix those levees, there weren’t going to be any Army engineers to fix them anyway because you had a much more important construction job for them — BUILDING DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ!
On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn’t stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there done that.
There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to use it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out. Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm like this inevitable. Ignore them and all their global warming Chicken Littles. There is nothing unusual about a hurricane that was so wide it would be like having one F-4 tornado that stretched from New York to Cleveland.
No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It’s not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no transportation to get out of town. C’mon, they’re black! I mean, it’s not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don’t make me laugh! Race has nothing — NOTHING — to do with this!
You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are near Tikrit.
Yours,
Michael Moore

www.MichaelMoore.comP.S. That annoying mother, Cindy Sheehan, is no longer at your ranch. She and dozens of other relatives of the Iraqi War dead are now driving across the country, stopping in many cities along the way. Maybe you can catch up with them before they get to DC on September 21st.
Michael Moore is a lying fat fuck.

where are the facts for the accusations.. seriously
1. no helicopters – not true, many were ready to be used they just needed to find landing zones and areas in need
2. no national guards – not true, when the levee broke bush sent 15,000 to the region immediately
3. bush didnt know it was coming – not true, he declared a disaster area 4 days in advance and pleaded with the people on the gulf coast to evacuate 2 days in advance
4. engineer cuts – probably true and that seems bad
5. people who didnt leave not helped – nobody thought the levee would be breached so they offered those who could not leave a chance to weather out the hurricane in the stadium.. they then got stuck due to the flood..unavoidable in my opinion
#3 | Comment by Evestay — September 4, 2005 @ 1:02 am
louisiana voted for bush i think…i wonder who they would vote for now..
#4 | Comment by matt fonty — September 4, 2005 @ 1:09 am
People expect the President of the United States of America to be some kind of super hero.
He gave them warning, he told them to evacuate and they didn’t listen.
I know it’s difficult with the way New Orleans is situated, but it’s tough shit if you had a weeks notice and didn’t listen to it.
It’s not like Bush could have grown to be five miles wide to deflect the hurricane away from Louisiana, and Michael Moore is just being his typical attention-whore self trying to gain free publicity in the wake of a disaster.
What’s worse? Not handling the crisis quite as well as expected, or exploiting people’s misery to get his name in the newspapers?
Michael Moore, just shut the fuck up.

6. Bush stayed on vacation for 2 more days while people died in the streets of New Orleans.
7. If you’re still a Bush-licker you need psychiatric help.

#7 | Comment by AngelBaby — September 4, 2005 @ 1:24 am
Oh, so you mean Bush was paying close attention watching Americans die on national TV while he sat for 3 days doing nothing? Thanks for the clarification, Rush.
#8 | Comment by Bill Clay — September 4, 2005 @ 1:30 am
I know who I side with. Mr Michael Moore.
George Bush should (and in fact was) never have been elected to the position of President.
He is without doubt the dumbest, naive and most insensitive leader of a country I can recall.
A throughly selfish incompetant man, who cares only for the rich.
#9 | Comment by Matt — September 4, 2005 @ 1:34 am
Whatever, douche.
You’re clearly one of these rabid lefties who think that there was something Bush could’ve done ALL BY HIMSELF to somehow avert this tragedy.
What were people like Ted Kennedy, Jesse Jackson, and even your corpulent, “every-man” spokesperson Moore doing for those same 3 days you mentioned? That’s what I thought. Thanks for the clarification, Sarandon.

#11 | Comment by AngelBaby — September 4, 2005 @ 1:42 am
You mean we have DOZENS of Commanders-in-Chiefs running around who can order the army into New Orleans to help? Thank God Bush doesn’t have to handle that responsibility all by himself! Clearly it’s beyond him.
#12 | Comment by Bill Clay — September 4, 2005 @ 1:44 am
even though i voted for bush, i agree with #9…if john kerry had of been president, he would have gotten that boat he road around in in vietnam and saved hundreds of thousands of the STUPID FUCKS THAT THOUGHT THE TIN SHITHOUSES THEY BUILD BELOW SEA LEVEL WOULD STAND UP TO A HURRICANE AAAANNNNDDD A FLOOD CAUSED BY THEIR LACK OF FUNDING FROM STATE TAXES BECAUSE THE AREA IS CONTENT TO BE A BUNCH OF VAGRANTS, LOSERS, DRUNKS AND/OR VOODOO WITCHES.

i’ve got an idea. let’s live well below the poverty line in a city that sits below sea level. better yet, let’s not buy a car so if we are confronted with a natural disaster we can’t get the FUCK out of dodge.

#15- I’ve never heard the argument of blaming poor people for being poor. Usually poverty breeds more poverty, a cycle continuing until some rich white guy blames the poor for their own situation. I hate everything between California to New York, but that is just stupid. Way to go jackass.
And Bush could have done one thing, stop by and be there for a couple hours. Be a press whore and do the “look I’m helping” bullshit that every elected offical does and make it look like he cares at all.
#18 | Comment by ninbw — September 4, 2005 @ 3:48 am
Bush has not made one single mistake in his entire presidency. FACT.
#19 | Comment by Nerima — September 4, 2005 @ 3:55 am
A. Bush is a big giant loser.
B. Almost all politicians are big giant losers.
C. The other two are gay and were doing 69 while New Orleans drowned.
D. Bush could not have stopped the hurricane.
E. I don’t want Bush cruising around in a raft trying to play “Coast Guard” any more than I want the homeless drunk down the street to get a job and start cooking my food at McD’s.
F. Probably more could have been done. This was probably in part the fault of the prez as well as the fault of those he assigned to deal with the problem.
G. They were too poor and/or stupid to avoid a hurricane. I may be a procrastinator myself… but 4 days to save your ass isn’t enough? Fucking Hell!
H. This means less gasoline consumers which should help lower our gas prices. (You are probably going to hell too, so don’t start.)

#21 | Comment by Ryan — September 4, 2005 @ 4:08 am
A. Bush is not the President of the United States, Dick Cheney is. George W. Bush is the figurehead and couldn’t lead the Bumblefuck, Texas Volunteer Fire Department.
B. Most of the Louisiana National Guard is in . . . you guessed it! . . . Iraq!
C. You build or live below sea level you are stupid and deserve to die. Its called natural selection.
D. The mayor of New Orleans is an idiot. They should have loaded up everyone on every city bus, school bus, and every other kind of bus in the city and gotten as many people they could have out of Dodge before the hurricane struck.
E. The politicans in these corrupt southern states most likely took bribes from developers to get around pesky things like building structures to withstand hurricanes.
F. Louisiana is a shit hole, has always been a shit hole, and will continue to be a shit hole until it is totally submerged by the Gulf of Mexico.
G. If the hurricane hit Texas there would have been massive federal aid the second it hit land. There would have also been no looting in Texas, as all the looters would have been shot by the gun-loving-and-toting Texans.
H. Texas should be its own country and then they can go to war with whoever they want.

I have. I have a lot of friends from Lou, they said that if you’re born poor you basically stay poor unless you have a talent that gets you into a college or your a rapper. or Work for Disney.
See I’m tired of peopel bagging on the people that stayed, because a majority that stayed, just COULD not come up with funds to leave.
Most of them didn’t have cars.
As for the Anti Texas statements, what’s up with that? Just because Bush is from TExas? He’s not from Texas! you dipshits! He was born in New Haven, Connecticut he’s not a native Texan.

Dairy, your point of view has both refreshed and challenged everyone who has ever read it.
None of your points are valid. There is a lot of money being pumped into New Orleans right now, as we speak. And even before a drop of water hit the land, there were many scientists were attempting to predict the major effects of Hurricane Katrina. Get you head out of you ass and think for a second.
#28 | Comment by Macungah — September 4, 2005 @ 5:54 am

#29 | Comment by dudelike — September 4, 2005 @ 5:56 am
#25 is blatant faggotry.
In other news, poverty breeds ignorance. These dumb bastards are looting their own neighborhoods, and shooting at relief helicopters. Hell, even the cops there are looting. The blame goes both ways on this one. The people should have been forced out. No, “weathering the storm” bullshit … just get the fuck out. Those who are there now shouldn’t resort to lawlessness, because that doesn’t help your fucking situation.
And I don’t care how tightly AngelBaby clings to G.W. Bush’s nuts, he and his administration, as well as the elected officials of Louisiana, have all dropped the ball on organizing and executing the relief efforts in New Orleans. PERIOD. This has nothing to do with Republicans vs. Democrats. Insulting people who are not happy with the administration’s inability to get their shit together time and time again makes you look stupid. While I don’t personally think this is racially motivated, I do believe that the powers that be weren’t quick enough in their mobilization. I also think those who have resorted to looting and anarchy should not be helped. If we send the National Guard to help you, and you shoot at them … well then, fuck you very much my friend.
But that’s just me.

ninbw…you’ve never heard the argument of blaming the poor people for being poor? who would you blame then? i’m not saying it’s entirely their fault, but if poverty breeds more poverty (which is not true) why not do simple things to break the chain of poverty? like get a job for example. if thousands of illegal immigrants can live above the poverty line then why can’t they? why continue to have numerous children? to get more government money? oh, that’s right, everyone should have five or more children.
why not educate themselves? if it’s abundantly apparent that it’s harder for one get a good education (which it is) then why not try harder to earn that education?

A lot of people on here who are defending Bush keep bringing up the fact that those who are against him expected Bush to single-handedly help and prevent the situation. It’s not Bush that they expected it from, but the whole administration. There are several people who are to deal with the different aspects of the event, and it is MOST of those people who did a poor job. So the whole come-back of “You’re a tool because you think Bush has to do this stuff all by himself!” is not valid….

I’m not saying that all people can find jobs and work themselves out of poverty, but they could atleast have jobs and use welfare as a supplement so they could actually live at, if not above, the poverty line.
#66 | Comment by aclerok — September 5, 2005 @ 2:28 pm
I think part of the problem with the system the way it is now is that the people who do try and get jobs to better their situation find themselves cut off from welfare at an income far below what a normal person could survive on. I think pretty much any reasonable person who had to choose between not working (getting “free” money from the government) or busting their ass at a low paying (minimum wage) job to earn anywhere near the same amount would choose welfare. It’s not about being lazy–it’s that there’s little to no incentive for these people to better their situation. It’s not that it’s difficult; it’s REALLY FUCKING difficult if not close to impossible.
Disclaimer: Before anyone freaks out on me — I’m NOT saying “hooray for poor people, please give them all the money I pay in taxes so they can hang out doing nothing all day except make lots of babies.” I’m saying the welfare system is inherently flawed and goddamnit someone should fix it. (Preferably some non-partison person who knows a hell of a lot more about it than I do.)

I never said it was impossible for someone in that situation to change their life. I said it was really hard. Supposing you graduate high school–that’s certainly a good start. But then you have to find the money to go to college. That alone is enough to put the kibosh on the rest of the plan for most people coming from poverty. People with no money can’t just “decide” to go to college. Getting a loan when you have no money is a bit tough, which leaves scholarships. Are there enough of those to go around for everyone who’s decided to better their life and further their education (excellent grades or not)? No.
So good for all those homeless orphans that you know who’ve pulled themselves up by the bootstraps and are now well-off. Deciding to make a change is indeed a very important step in the right direction but no amount of resolve alone is going to pay the bills.

So what’s your answer…just carry all of them on the backs on the rest of us who actually bother to get an education and work hard for a living? Thanks, Karl Marx…but I think that’s already been tried and proven a failure.

# 71 – “Are there enough of those to go around for everyone who’s decided to better their life and further their education (excellent grades or not)? No.”
“It’s not that it’s difficult; it’s REALLY FUCKING difficult if not close to impossible.”
Those two statements, and others like it, are the problem. People like you, who go around stating that there is no way they can get money for college and even if they tried, it’s “close to impossible” to get out of poverty. So why bother?
There is fafsa, the military, about a million scholarship based websites, and many other recourses. Colleges even have emergency loans they give out to help students that are enrolled.
There are ways, if one tries. But if you buy into the “close to impossible” sentiment, then you are already screwed, and ignorant.

For the answer to this I refer you to my previous comment (#67): “I’m saying the welfare system is inherently flawed and goddamnit someone should fix it. (Preferably some non-partison person who knows a hell of a lot more about it than I do.)”
Thanks for your always insightful point of view.

(Sorry for the consecutive posts.)
#73: This discussion seems to be getting further and further away from the point of my original comment, which is simply that the way the system is currently set up, it is extraordinarily difficult for someone to break out from poverty-level living. I am not arguing that no one should try to better their situation. What I am saying is that the system is broken and someone should fix it. I am not suggesting that I know how to fix it.

#75 – You’re talking to a brick wall. These effete snobs just can’t imagine why anyone would ‘choose’ to be poor.
#76 | Comment by Bill Clay — September 6, 2005 @ 8:03 am
Getting money for college is actually harder for people that aren’t living in poverty than it is for the ones who are. They are offered many grants from the government that don’t need to be paid back, unlike the loans that the government offers to the middle class. If poor people would have the initiative, they would have just as much of a chance to go to college as any middle class person. This was proven to me at my school, which had a lot of poor people from Chicago in it. And may I add that while they maybe had the inititive to go to college, many of them were gone after the first semester. You could argue that this is because of the poor quality of their previous schools, but I would say that it is more likely the effect of them not being motivated once they are at college.

Yeah, I went to NIU. Graduated last May.
#79 | Comment by aclerok — September 7, 2005 @ 6:42 am
I second what #77 said.
My parents give me no money whatsoever for college, but since they are middle class, I get no grants, but tons of loans I have to pay back. Whereas, I have friends that come from families that are poor and have half a dozen kids, and they get all their college paid for, plus work studies. Granted they did live hard lives, in some people’s eyes, but god damnit, they get a free education now as long as they have a 2.5 GPA… whereas, I get pretty damn screwed.
Kind of hurts to see someone driving around in their new ford focus, having their ipod and new laptop (from school grants), when I have to work my ass without any of those things and know I have $20,000+ in loans when I graduate –all because the governemnet tells me my parents have money, which they don’t give to me.

This thread died for me when I read somebody blame the poor for not having cars to drive away in.
Now that I see the battle rages on, I suggest that any of you that still live with your parents and/or (more importantly) their money backing you up imagine that you woke up this morning and that everything (including your house) has been washed away overnight. Maybe then you’ll find a shread of sympathy for these people that have just been flushed out of the only homes they’ve ever had.

oh, and as far as people being too poor to have cars?
if i didn’t have two nickels to rub together, lived in a place that was mostly below sea level, and heard that one of the most powerful hurricanes on record was headed right for me…i’d point my two feet north and walk as far as i could in the 2-3 days warning i had.
i certainly wouldn’t throw my hands up, curse my situation, put my head between my legs and kiss my ass goodbye. that’s just stupid.

i wouldn’t know #86, but your question wouldn’t have been so stupid if you bothered to remember from elementary school biology that we breathe with our lungs, not our heart.

#115 | Comment by EndlessMike — September 8, 2005 @ 8:22 pm
Wow, I’ve read about three intelligent posters out of #115 posts. Lets get back to the subject; Fact 1: Michael Moore started out as a humble and inventive documentarian, but jesus man, let the endless blathering rest. Leave whining, yelling and name-calling to the conservatives, you’re starting to make us look as stupid as them. Fact 2: No one has mentioned the report given to President Bush and published in Newsweek back in 2003, saying that the New Orleans levees should be condemned, would not survive a class FOUR, and went on to predict looting, mass drowning and violence, dangerous overfilling of the superdome and convention center, and families trapped on rooftops. Do any of you actually read the newspapers, or just watch FoxNews slackjawed? His report has been republished in the wake of the hurricane in nearly every paper in the country. And Bush had it on his desk two years ago. He rejected it saying it was to expensive to repair/rebuild the levees in the midst of the war in Iraq. Lets see, Iraq/major AMERICAN city? Hmmm. Good thing the fuckers got his priorities straight.
