Dear AIM user,
We see that you’ve used AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) in the past, so we wanted to let you know that AIM will be discontinued and will no longer work as of December 15, 2017.
Before December 15, you can continue to use the service. After December 15, you will no longer have access to AIM and your data will be deleted. If you use an @aim.com email address, your email account will not be affected and you will still be able to send and receive email as usual.
We’ve loved working on AIM for you. From setting the perfect away message to that familiar ring of an incoming chat, AIM will always have a special place in our hearts. As we move forward, all of us at AOL (now Oath) are excited to continue building the next generation of iconic brands and life-changing products for users around the world.

I have many fond memories of using AIM as a means of communication between all the people that used to come here back in the day. This was like between the year 2000 up till 2011 at least. Since then, more and more people just stopped using AIM. Towards the end, i was just mostly using it as a way to talk to Angelbaby and Smash. Eventually, everyone stopped using it guess.
I’m guessing people maybe started using Skype more? Or Facebook Messenger? I never really got into Skype or Messenger. I do use WhatsApp though.
Every once in a while, i do log on to AIM just to see if there’s anybody still on there. It’s usually just 2 or 3 people. Just logged on a couple minutes ago and it’s just one dude on (Hey there Chris Tilton!).
I still rock my “whore” buddy icon (a picture of Suzi with a lollipop? i think? with the word whore on it. she made the icon herself if you’re wondering. she’s totally not a whore).
I actually still have chat logs for pretty much EVERYBODY i’ve ever spoken to on AIM. I could probably pull up a random chat log with you in it if you ask me to.
I think one of the more memorable things about AIM for me was when people thought my screen name was Avril Lavigne’s.

Fun times.
There’s this game on PC (and Mac), which is essentially an AIM simulator, and it’s so fucking good. Like seriously, play this game if you haven’t already. It’s called Emily is Away (and there’s also a sequel, Emily is Away Too). You can download the first game for free (steam link here) but the second one you have to pay for (totally worth it though IMO).
Really worth playing. The nostalgia trip is insane.
Anyway, RIP AIM. On December 15 2017 at least. It’s still up for now. But it’ll be the end of an era.
You were the best messaging app. A lot happened on AIM, lots of friendships and relationships. Lots of good memories and good times. I’m actually sad!
