0bviously you have never known anyone with AIDS and probably have not lived in a major urban center. If either of these things were true, you’d be speaking differently. When I worked in theatre, the first thing we did every day was read the @#$#@ obituaries to find out what luminary we’d lost on that particular day, because at a certain point (pre-awareness) they were dropping like flies.
The AIDS crisis is not overblown. It’s currently blowing the African continent to pieces. Governments verge on collapse as their ministers die. The healthy starve because the farmers are all dying.
Yes, it’s a different situation in First World countries, but that’s only NOW. AIDS mutates very quickly given the opportunity. So the various treatments that currently extend life where affordable healthcare is available will not *necessarily* continue to work going forward. Our best chance to stop AIDS is to stop transmisssion. And the best way to stop transmission short of abstinence is safe sex.

Panic is right though – AIDS is not a major concern for hetrosexuals in western countries – at the moment. The main reason for the promotion of condoms is to stop other diseases and unwanted pregnancys, AIDS is used to scaremonger and rightly so. As long as you don’t sleep with any recently emigratted African people, prostitutes or needle users then your chances of catching AIDS is very very small.

In my opinion, even if the chances of getting it are very small, AIDS is still something you should think about. The idea of trusting statistics to help you out sounds kind of silly to me.
Also, condoms have pores, and a single AIDS pathogen can get through the pores, so that means AIDS can be transmitted through condoms…
